There are exactly four things to consider when you're choosing your earrings. First and foremost, what is your style? Secondly, what suits your face? Thirdly, what feels comfortable? And lastly, what is the occasion that will you be wearing them?
The great thing about fashion is that you can mix and match whatever you choose to express yourself on the outside, and let's face it, earrings look great and complete your look. But what your look actually is must be considered when selecting your earrings or you could look unmatched and inconsistent. For example, if you wear sophisticated and sleek clothes, you would look a bit strange with colourful and large earrings. Most likely you'd feel more comfortable in stud earrings, small hoops or some little gold or silver dangly numbers. On the other hand, if you're more flamboyant or colourful with your style, larger, more obvious earrings such as larger drop earrings or hoops would be the thing for you.
Another thing to consider is how you wear your hair. There is not much reason to wear small stud earrings when your hair is down as they'll be hidden most of the time and your hair will frame your face. Best to go with some larger dangle earrings or hoops so the glimpses are more frequent and obvious. If you wear your hair up, it's less important which type you choose, but hoops and drop earrings are a very pretty way to frame your face.
Not all faces or bodies are the same, and just like how some clothing won't suit certain body types, nor will some earrings suit certain face types. For example, if you have a narrow or smaller face and head, large hoop earrings really aren't the best choice as they are overbearing compared to your face. You're better off going with some dainty drop earrings or studs. In contrast, if you have a larger face and better yet some big hair to go with it, hoops are your go-to and look good and in proportion to your face.
Not all earrings are equally comfortable, and some people prefer one type over another. Earrings with posts and a stud at the back are preferable to some, while hook earrings are the choice for others. The weight of the earring is also a factor. Heavy earrings can put pressure on your ear lobe, which can cause irritation and can stretch your piercing, so steer clear of heavy earrings unless you will be wearing them for only a short time.
Finally, you need to consider where you plan to wear your earrings. Simple and conservative earrings like small drop, hoop or stud earrings are great for the work environment or day-to-day activities such as shopping or sight seeing, whereas you can get much more extravagant with going out on the town at night or a fancy function, especially if the rest of your outfit is on par. If you're going on a date, some sparkly, elegant drop earrings will captivate his eye and draw attention to your pretty face. If you're getting married, some small dangly diamond earrings are a common choice.
Hopefully these tips have helped your choose your earrings for your occasion, but the most important thing is that you like them and you like wearing them. If you're still unsure, you can take this quiz to help you decide.
